A robust, comprehensive Multi-Tiered System of Supports (MTSS) program offers numerous benefits for students, teachers, and parents that fosters with both academic success and overall well-being for students, including:
- Early identification of at-risk students no matter what their needs may be.
- Data-driven decision making to guide instructional and intervention decisions.
- All students receive the level of support they need, regardless of mitigating factors.
- Improves student outcome for better academic performance, behavior, and emotional resilience.
- Supports whole-child development, not just academics.
Where do we start?
Have the District MTSS coordinator:
- Review the MTSS Coordinator’s Comprehensive Manual.
- Determine who the process needs to be reviewed with for final approval (i.e., district leadership team members that should be involved in this process) for district implementation. Campus coordinator’s input should be considered as well. If approved follow steps 3 – 6. When reviewing the information, remember that the district can implement this hybrid model 100%, or may take and use certain parts.
- Schedule MTSS training with the suggested times below:
- The campus coordinator as soon as possible.
- The campus administrators training within in one week. Both principals and assistant principals should be trained to ensure they lead in supporting the program, coordinator, families, and staff.
- Have the campus coordinators and administrators schedule a staff meeting to train the staff as soon as possible before the MTSS process is begun.
- Review the MTSS Coordinator Training Module and schedule a meeting with campus coordinator’s to provide the training and provide a copy of the manual.
- Review the MTSS Administrator Training Module and schedule a PD time shortly after training the campus coordinators.
- After the campus coordinators have had time to review all the materials and process the training (about a week or so), schedule a time with them to review the MTSS Teacher Training Module. The campus coordinators are to schedule a staff development during a campus staff meeting.
